Pearland ISD students win multiple awards at math and science meet

A record 113 competitors from the Pearland Independent School District achieved multiple successes at the Texas Math and Science Coaches Association competition on April 2 in San Antonio.

The team from Pearland Junior High West and Sablatura Middle School achieved bronze in the competition, third place in science, fourth place in math, seventh place in number sense, and eighth place in calculator applications. Competitors from Pearland Junior High South and Rogers Middle School also represented the district.

From Pearland Junior High West, Justin Braden placed first in science and Alan Yao placed first in math, 20th in number sense and 20th in science. Other 20 finalists include: Tanishta Anbu, Josh Anino, Nuhan Hasan, Geoffrey Liu, Shaotan Liu, Caleb Ni, Grae Paterson, Roy Wang, Efran Zhao and Jerry Zhu.

The top 20 graduates of Sablatura Middle School were: Sofia Castillo, Ethan Chen, Leah Hong, Sarah Jacob, Emerson Li, Andrew Lu, Andrew Nguyen, Rexford Pan, Haobo Shi, Suya Yang and Daniel Xi. Caroline Mao of Rogers Middle School also finished in the top 20.

Coaches include: Jennifer Phillips of Rogers; Margaret Needler and Kacey Hart of Sablatura; Ashlyn Beard of PJH South; and Jamie Williams and Susan Kovach of PJH West.

‘Leader of the Pack’ earns 7 Tommy Tune nominations

With its spring production of the Broadway musical retrospective “Leader of the Pack,” Pearland High School’s drama department is up for the 2022 Tommy Tune Awards program for Outstanding Theater Musical Under the Stars.

The cast and crew earned seven of 13 possible nominations, including Cheramie Hopper for Outstanding Directing.

Shelby Garrett received a nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Leading Role and Granger Lusk was honored with a nomination for Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role.

David Barker, Daniella Fink, Simeon Love and Lusk received a nod for Outstanding Lighting Design. Barker, Love and Lusk were also nominated for Outstanding Scenic Design.

Michael Kessler was rewarded with a nomination for Best Music Director.

The winners will be announced on May 27 during the virtual Tommy Tune Awards 2022 ceremony.

Collegiate Honor Society Initiates Pearland Natives

Four Pearland students have been inducted into the Phi Kappa Phi All-Discipline Honor Society.

Ana Calleja and Anna Schneider of Texas A&M University and Claire Fuller and Vivienne Pham of the University of Houston are among more than 25,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni who have joined the organization this year. ACC Honor Society inducts 43

The Phi Theta Kappa Mu Upsilon chapter of Alvin Community College welcomed its new members on April 12.

Spring 2022 inductees include: Rosalyn Azar, Zoe Beck, Alexandra Chhim, Natalie Contreras, Thanh Dang, Dylan Dreyfus, Constance Fewell, Michelle Fowlie, Abigail Garza, Shelby Gast, Sarah Gilliland, Kali Hardy, Krista Harris, Jeremy Hathaway, Isabele Hegele, Jennifer Heidorn and Corley Hodde.

The others are: William Holzhausen, Madison Hunter, Alise Jordan, Edward Klein, Sofia Loera, Marianna Murchison, Tram Nguyen, Marleyna Ochoa, Rebecca Omenukor, Rachael Onwukwe, Ada Palmer, Joshin Perakattu, Ashleigh Prince, Nepha Ramclam, Ann Rodrigues, Cassandra Ruiz, Emilia Salas, Christopher Smith, Sebastian Soliz, Blanca Soto, Jackson Spencer, Brett Tisdale, Philiya Varghese, Samantha Watkins, Tara Woods and Rogelio Zuniga.
